Vocal Music Teacher

Strive Charter School

About The Position

We are seeking a Vocal Music Teacher  to join our team in a supportive and respectful teaching environment. We want to foster joy through developing a strong singing program at Strive. The goal is to incorporate singing and music into the daily rhythm of our school.

Your responsibilities will be:

  • Leading daily singing instruction for all K-4 classrooms accompanied with a string instrument
  • Leading “Glee Club”
  • Fostering a love of music and singing

At Strive Charter School, we pay our educators a reasonable salary for reasonable hours in good working conditions.

  • Your working day will be eight hours. You will have at least 2½ hours during the day for lunch, professional development, and individual and team planning, so you shouldn’t need to take work home.
  • Instruction begins at 9 a.m. so you’ll be able to arrive at 8:30 a.m. and leave by 4:30 p.m.
  • Our school is conveniently located in the South Bronx just two blocks from the Cypress Avenue # 6 subway station.
  • Our dress code is relaxed. You can wear sneakers and dress comfortably (so long as you dress in a way that our students’ parents will also find appropriate).
  • Our philosophy is pragmatically progressive. We will have some traditional instruction but during much of the day, children will be involved in self-directed activities such as reading books of their choice, doing science kits, engaging in project based learning, and playing educational games. We want a joyful and rewarding school environment for both our teachers and students.
  • If you have children who are elementary school age, they are welcome to attend our school and we hope they will! We are seeking to create a joyful and academically ambitious school to which we would want to send our own children.
  • You will be treated with respect by students, parents, and by us. Teachers work too hard to be treated disrespectfully, so we don’t tolerate it.
  • You will have six weeks of paid time off including holidays, vacation days, and sick/personal days that can be converted to vacation days if unused.

Strive Charter School will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, twelve months a year but that won't be your work schedule. You will work weekdays for eight hours a day. We will rely on teaching assistants to staff the additional optional days and hours that we are open.

Application Instructions:

To apply, please submit the following:

Resume outlining your teaching and/or music experience.

Short video (1–2 minutes) of yourself singing while accompanying yourself on guitar, ukulele, or another portable instrument.

  • The song may be anything you like, but ideally something you might teach elementary school students.
  • Please imagine you are leading students in singing.
  • A simple phone recording is perfectly fine.

Brief note of interest explaining why you would enjoy helping build a joyful singing and music program for elementary students.

Please include a link to your video (YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) in your application materials.

If you’re passionate about helping students grow as singers and performers, we’d love to hear from you

Generous fringe benefits including health insurance and 401(k) plan.
